From Gold Coast to Ghana: A Heritage Experience
February 16, 2024Planning a trip to West Africa soon? We’ve curated a list of packing essentials and important tips to help you enjoy your trip. The West African climate is usually warm and humid, with rainy seasons depending on the month throughout the sub-region. Our adventure checklist is designed to remove the stress of packing, ensuring you’re well-prepared for your cultural, heritage, and adventure experiences
Light and Airy Clothing

Due to the hot climate, consider packing clothing made with cotton, linen or any other breathable material. It is also important to consider dressing modestly to respect to different cultures and people.
Protection Against the Sun

The sun can be quite intense during the day so it is important to pack hats, sunglasses and sunscreen with at least spf 50 which is a must anywhere in the world but is especially recommended for travel to West Africa.
Comfortable Footwear

Your trip may include treks, hikes or general walking and comfortable walking shoes are a must. Sneakers, flat sandals or flip flops with good grip makes exploring the terrain more enjoyable.
Carry Cash

While ATMs are common in major urban areas across West Africa, rural villages and markets may not have digital payment options. Carrying a reasonable amount of local currency ensures convenience. Exchange foreign currencies at reputable forex bureaus or agents and carry smaller denominations for flexibility.
Travel Adapters and Power Banks

Prior to departure, confirm the voltage and power socket outlet type at your destination. For example, Benin and Togo use Type C (EU plug) outlets with 220V, while Ghana have Type G (UK plug) outlets with a voltage of 230V. Invest in multi-pin travel adapters for stress free charging options. Consider purchasing power banks especially when you’re on the move.
Medications and First Aid Kit

Suffering an illness abroad can be distressing. Stock up on essential medications and purchase a basic first aid kit to cater for minor injuries. Familiarize yourself with nearby medical facilities for peace of mind. Consider taking anti-malarial medication before your trip for added protection.
Insect Repellent

Tropical regions often harbor mosquitoes and other biting insects, increasing the risk of mosquito-borne diseases. Utilize insect repellents containing DEET and wear protective attire to minimize exposure especially in the evenings.
Embassies and Emergency Contacts

Familiarize yourself with the location of your home country’s consulate or embassy locations for emergency situations. Additionally, provide your hotel or host with reachable emergency contact details as a precautionary measure.
