A Journey Through West African Nature Reserves
June 13, 2024
“Aboakyer,” which translates to “hunting for game or animal” in the Fante language, is more than just a festival; it’s a profound commemoration of the Effutu people’s history. It marks their migration from the ancient Western Sudan Empire (Timbuktu) to their present-day home in Winneba. Legend has it that their principal deity, Penkyi Otu, protected them throughout their arduous journey.
Initially, the deity requested an annual human sacrifice from the royal family. However, as times evolved, the people appealed for an alternative. The first substitute was a fierce wild cat, but capturing it alive proved perilous, leading to many lost lives. A further appeal led to the acceptance of a mature bushbuck (a species of antelope) as the offering. This pivotal moment shaped the core tradition of the Aboakyer festival: the ritualistic, unarmed capture of a live bushbuck.
The climax of Aboakyer is undoubtedly the spectacular deer hunt. Two traditional warrior groups, the Tuafo (Number One) and the Dentsifo (Number Two) Asafo companies, embark on a thrilling expedition into a nearby game reserve. Their mission? To be the first to catch a live bushbuck using only their bare hands and traditional tactics.
The atmosphere in Winneba on this day is electric. The Asafo companies, adorned in their traditional regalia, parade through the streets with infectious energy, drumming, and chanting. The entire community, along with visitors from across Ghana and the globe, gathers at the grand durbar grounds in anticipation.
The first Asafo company to return with their live catch is met with jubilant cheers and declared the winner for the year, their bravery and skill highly lauded. The captured deer is then presented to the Paramount Chief (Omanhene) of the Effutu Traditional Area, currently Neenyi Ghartey VII. In a symbolic act, the Omanhene steps on the deer three times, signifying its acceptance by the deity Penkyi Otu for the subsequent sacred rites. This act is also believed to predict a good harvest for the coming year.
While the deer hunt is the centerpiece, the Aboakyer festival is a rich tapestry woven with numerous other cultural activities and traditions:
