ARRIVAL IN DAKAR

Arrive in Dakar, Senegal. You will be met at the airport by your guide and transferred to your hotel for check-in. Dinner and overnight at your hotel.

DAKAR – PINK LAKE

After breakfast, depart for a full day tour of the mysterious Pink Lake. Arrive at this incredible rose colored body of water known as Pink Lake, ('Lac Rose' in French, 'Retba' in Wolof). Take some time to swim in the shallow, warm waters without any fear of drowning. You are guaranteed to float (as everything floats on this lake due to its very high salinity)! During the week, men and mostly women are busy crushing the bottom of the lake, which consists of a thick crust of salt. The lake is particularly spectacular at dawn and dusk, when feldspar deposits reflecting the sunlight through salty waters produce a unique and vibrant pink color.

After visiting the lake, have lunch at a nearby resort located on the beach. You will have the opportunity to relax by the pool, take a ride along the beach on a camel or ride on the beach in a dune buggy. Dinner and overnight at your hotel.

PINK LAKE – THIES – SAINT LOUIS

After breakfast, depart for the drive to Saint Louis. En-route, stopover for lunch in Thies. This city is known for beautiful baskets hand woven by local artisans. After lunch, you will have the opportunity to purchase baskets, hats and other items at bargain prices. Continue the journey to Saint Louis for a late afternoon arrival. Dinner and overnight at your hotel.

SAINT LOUIS – DJOUDJ NATIONAL PARK –SAINT LOUIS

After breakfast, depart for Oiseaux de Djoudj National Park. Djoudj is a bird sanctuary along the southeast bank of the River Senegal. The park is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site and contains almost 400 species of birds. The most visible birds here are pelicans and flamingos.

From late October to the end of March, around 10, 000 pelicans migrate to this park and take up habitation on the wetland cliffs of its river. You will explore this enthralling park in local boats. Lunch will be served in a quiet camp before returning to Saint Louis. Dinner and overnight at your hotel.

SAINT LOUIS – KAOLACK – TAMBACOUDA

After breakfast, depart for Kaolack, a city located in the central part of Senegal. En-route, pass through the city of Touba, famous for being home to one of the largest, most beautiful mosques in Western Africa. Enjoy lunch in Kaolack before continuing to your hotel in Tambacounda. Dinner and overnight at your hotel.

TAMBACOUNDA – NIOKOLO KOBA PARK – WASSADOU

After breakfast, depart for Wassadou. Upon arrival, check-in and embark on a safari in Niokoloba Park. There are various species of mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians living in Niokoloba. You will have the opportunity to view monkeys, baboons, hippos, crocodiles and more! Lunch today will be in the camp. Dinner and overnight at your hotel.

WASSADOU – BANJUL

After an early breakfast, depart for Banjul, Gambia. Check-in at your hotel after a late afternoon arrival. Spend the rest of the day at leisure. Dinner and overnight at your hotel.

BANJUL – ROOTS TOUR

After breakfast, depart for a visit to the village of Alex Haley’s ancestral home, Juffure. This small village became famous in the 1970s following the television adaptation of Haley’s bestselling book, "Roots." As a young boy, Haley first learned of his African ancestor, Kunta Kinte, by listening to the family stories of his maternal grandparents in Henning, Tennessee. According to family history, Kunta Kinte landed with other Gambian Africans in "Naplis" (Annapolis, Maryland) where he was sold into slavery.

You will also visit the tranquil village of Albreda. There you will view the ruins of the 'factory,' a fortified slave station built by the French in the late 17th Century. Lunch will be enjoyed in the village. Dinner and overnight at your hotel.

BANJUL – FATHALA NATURE RESERVE, TOUBACOUTA

After breakfast at the hotel, spend the first part of your day on a safari at the Fathala Nature Reserve. Following lunch, continue on to the Saloum Islands. Enjoy a boat ride on the Saloum River, with ample opportunity for bird watching and relaxation. Visit the traditional village of “Sippo,” where you will meet ethnic groups from Senegal, Gambia and Guinea Bissau, living together in perfect harmony. Enjoy dinner with traditional Gambian and Senegalese entertainment. Overnight at your hotel.

TOUBACOUTA – SIMAL

After breakfast, head to Simal where you will arrive in time for lunch. In the afternoon, board small boats and enjoy fishing the traditional Senegalese way. Return to the camp for dinner and overnight.

SIMAL – LEONA – JOAL – FADIOUTH – SALY

After breakfast, head to Fadiouth and Joal, driving through several traditional villages along the way. Lunch today will be on the island of Fadiouth, a unique village built on a shell bank. In the evening, leave Fadiouth for a village party. Partake in a scrumptious spread of traditional food and delicacies for dinner. You will also enjoy local entertainment as part of the evening’s festivities. Overnight at your hotel.
